Vibrant "Sankofa" Mosaic Murals Now Welcome Passengers at IAH Terminal D Gate 3
The Sankofa Mosaic Murals at George H. Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, TX, are a stunning testament to the power of cultural heritage and community collaboration. Created by visionary artist Reginald C. Adams, these murals embody the spirit of the West African Adinkra symbol Sankofa, which encourages learning from the past to build a better future. Spanning a grand scale with over 200,000 brilliantly colored glass and ceramic tiles, the murals reflect Houston's rich cultural diversity and the universal human journey. Located at Terminal D Gate 3, this vibrant installation invites travelers to pause, reflect, and connect with the profound wisdom and beauty embedded in its intricate design.
This project was commissioned by the Mayor's Office of Cultural Affairs on behalf of Houston Airport System for Intercontinental Airport of Houston, through the city's Civic Art Program and the Houston Arts Alliance.
The large mosaic mural at the lower landing features a vibrant Sankofa-inspired mandala, symbolizing reflection and growth, created with intricate patterns of brilliantly colored glass and ceramic tiles.
